Bangladesh’s road traffic death rate was 18.6 per 100,000 people in 2021, compared with 15.02 for the world and 15.64 for Central and Southern Asia, according to WHO estimates reported in the UN SDG Global Database (indicator 3.6.1).

18.6 vs 15.02 per 100,000

Bangladesh’s estimated road traffic death rate against the world rate, 2021.

The rate is about 24% above the global figure and 19% above the regional one. Within South Asia the picture is mixed: Nepal (28.2) and Afghanistan (24.1) are higher, while India (15.4), Bhutan (12.2), Pakistan (11.9) and Sri Lanka (11.5) are lower. Outside the region, Thailand records 25.4 and Viet Nam 17.7.

The indicator is tracked under SDG 3.6.1, so the same measure lets Bangladesh be compared with other countries and followed over time as WHO updates it.

One caveat matters. These are modelled WHO estimates, not a count of police-recorded crashes; WHO builds them from different national sources, and official national tallies can differ. Country rankings should be read as indicative, and the single 2021 data point does not show whether the rate is rising or falling.
