Bangladesh recorded 1.76 victims of intentional homicide per 100,000 people in 2023, down from 2.86 in 2014 and 2.48 in 2000, according to the UN SDG Global Database (SDG indicator 16.1.1). The 2023 figure is the lowest in the series.

2.86 → 1.76

Intentional homicide victims per 100,000 population, 2014 to 2023.

The rate hovered between 2.5 and 2.9 for the first 15 years of the series, then dropped: 2.34 in 2018 (no value is reported for 2019), 2.13 in 2020, 1.92 in 2021, 1.85 in 2022 and 1.76 in 2023. For comparison, the same database gives India 2.72 in 2023 and Pakistan 4.33 in 2023 (revised by national authorities), though countries report through different channels and the series are not strictly like-for-like.

The figures are compiled from national police records, so they measure recorded killings. They say nothing about other forms of violence, and a fall can reflect real change, differences in recording or reporting, or both; the data do not show which. For policy, homicide is only one part of SDG 16.1: trends in violence against women, abuse of children and political violence, which are far less visible in police data, need separate evidence before the decline is read as broader improvement in safety.
