A 30-year-old in Bangladesh faced an 18.1% chance of dying before turning 70 from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease in 2021, according to World Health Organization estimates. In 2000 the figure was 24.7%.
24.7% → 18.1%
Probability of dying between ages 30 and 70 from the four major non-communicable diseases, 2000 to 2021.
Most of the improvement came before 2015: the rate fell to 19.3% in 2014 and then barely moved, at 19.1–19.3% between 2015 and 2019, before dipping to 18.9% in 2020 and 18.1% in 2021.
Regional comparison shows there is room to improve. In 2021 the same measure was 13.9% in Sri Lanka and 15.9% in Bhutan, against 19.4% in Nepal, 23.6% in India and 25.5% in Pakistan.
A caveat: these are modelled WHO estimates rather than a count of registered deaths, and the latest available year is 2021.
