Bangladesh is one of the countries most exposed to climate change, and one of the least responsible for it. In 2024 the average Bangladeshi emitted 0.72 tonnes of CO₂ from fossil fuels and industry — about a sixth of the world average of 4.69 tonnes, a third of India’s and well below the South Asian average.

CO₂ emissions per person, 1990 to 2024.
Emissions per person have still grown more than fivefold since 1990 as electricity, industry and transport expanded, mostly on gas and, increasingly, coal and oil. How Bangladesh powers the next stage of its growth will decide whether that curve keeps climbing.
